Gutters: Why are They Important?

Gutters are the long, hollow device attached to the roof edges. Their primary purpose is to catch rainwater and direct it away from your foundation. For a house to be complete, it needs a gutter system to function properly.

Gutters serve different functions to protect your home and household. Men@WorX recommends installing quality gutters to protect your structure from water damage and leakages.

Importance of a Gutter System
Your gutters are responsible for water management. During a storm, they effectively channel water flow from your roof, through the downspouts, and direct it to appropriate areas outside the home. Without a gutter system, your roof can pick up a bunch of leaves and other debris, causing water to stagnate and overflow. This can make your home vulnerable to rotting, rusting, and other damage.

In addition, gutters prevent water from settling around your basement. When water overflows from your roof, it can seep into your foundation and slowly weaken everything that supports your structure.

Types of Gutters
Men@WorX understands how important it is to have a quality gutter system in your home. To meet your specific needs, we provide different types of gutters, including:

• One-piece gutters – These are the traditional gutters that most homeowners install in their homes. We offer two types: the first is with no slope with a roll former, and the second is custom-made for each structure.

• Two-piece gutters – They need professional installation to function properly. To avoid infiltration in the joint between the gutter and apron, our experts will apply proper waterproofing techniques.

• Built-in gutters – Also called gutter liners, they are traditionally found on older homes where gutters are placed in the lower edge of the roof.

 • Double bottom or shell and liner gutters – They feature a decorative outside shell with a custom profile. The tapered gutter liner inside is responsible for water drainage.

To determine the right gutter style for your home, consult Men@WorX. We can help you find the one that will suit your needs. Apart from gutter installation, we also offer gutter cleaning and inspection to ensure your gutters remain free from debris. For more information about our services, give us a call at 078 666 5368

Gutters collect rainwater from your roof, channels it vertically down a downpipe which channels the rainwater away from the foundation of your home and into a drain or any alternative drainage system.

Foundation stability

Gutters will prevent water from pooling around your home by channelling water into a drainage system. This way soil around the foundation of your home will not loosen and the structure will less likely degenerate as a result of excess water.

Decreased water damage

Issues such as damp, mold and other water damage are synonymous with homes that are constantly exposed to water and that have no way of directing rainwater.

Rainwater Harvesting

Gutters are ideal to collect rainwater from a roof, redirecting rainwater into a water tank. Rainwater could be utilized in various manners, even saving money on your municipality bill.

Home preservation

Gutters will protect moisture sensitive parts of your home such as wooden doors and window frames to name some. Homes that are not fitted with gutters run the risk of increased maintenance / repair cost that can seriously affect the structural integrity and the value of your home.

Raised value

Building standards and home maintenance have changed over time. Quality gutters will raise the overall value of your home as gutters prevents a variety of maintenance issues and structural damage caused by water, that will end in a decrease in property value.

Protects your garden

During seasonal rains, pools of water falling on your roof are most likely to run into your yard, causing major damage to your garden. Gutters can control the flow of water by redirecting water to other drainage systems such as a rainwater harvesting tank. Large amounts of water can also erode soil that can cause the foundation of your home to weaken.

Limits insects

Insects such as mosquitoes and termites are drawn to areas of damp and standing water. Without gutters redirecting water away from your home, your home could easy draw in unwanted guests such as insects.

Many homes that are still standing after 60 years are a testament to quality gutters. This has largely been as a result of good building practice. Home owners that do not install gutters can simply not expect a 100 year + lifespan on their homes.

With a good gutter system it makes it easier to implement a water harvesting system that can be used to water your garden, wash your vehicles, and to flush toilets saving the homeowner on water usage, and funds.
