Men@WorX have met with clients that attempt at warding off baboons, or monkeys and trying to limit the damage that they cause to the client’s property.
We've decided to give our clients a few ideas for baboon or monkey proofing their properties without any harm to the baboons, or monkeys.
What smell do baboons or monkeys hate?
Baboons and monkeys have a strong sense of smell and can be repelled by certain scents.
Consider using citrus peels, garlic cloves, or vinegar-soaked rags placed strategically around your garden to deter them.
How to get rid of baboons and monkeys at home naturally?
Using chilly powder rice balls: Boiled rice + crushed groundnut seeds + red chilly powder + coconut oil around the field deters the baboons and monkeys. On tasting the rice balls, they feel burning of their tongues and thirstiness due to which baboons, and monkeys will avoid the area. No water should be available in the vicinity.
How do you scare baboons and monkeys away?
Be confident, make a loud noise and bang pots and pans to chase him away. Baboons and monkeys will ignore you if you are not sure of yourself.
Fake snakes - They are very scared of snakes and the use of plastic toy snakes hanging on a piece of fishing line or being placed on a roof will frighten them away. These toy snakes must be moved around from time to time otherwise the baboons will realize that they are fake''.
Deploy an electronic sound repellent. Increasingly, places and institutions frequented by baboons and monkeys are turning to ultrasound repellent devices to ward off the baboons and monkeys.
The sounds cause stress and discomfort for baboons and monkeys in the specified areas, who will move away to avoid the sound.
Keep doors locked as baboons know how to open doors and windows. The smaller baboons can squeeze through security safety doors to grab food or cause chaos at anything they can grab from your home.
Also, keep refuse bags in a secure and locked bin as to not have the baboons ravaging for food in dustbins.
A sound repellents' impact on a baboon or monkey's health and well-being is uncertain, so more gentle preventative methods should be used first, or the regulations of such devices to be checked before installed.
Additionally, installing motion-activated sprinkler systems can startle and discourage baboons or monkeys from entering your garden.
What scares baboons, or monkeys away?
Spray the baboon, or monkey with a strong stream of water as they hate water.
Have a water pistol in the house and a hose pipe ready in the garden. Keep pets out of the way.
Do not try to snatch back anything from a baboon, or monkey – it will fight to hold on to food.
Promoting coexistence with baboons, and monkeys involves creating an environment that minimizes their attraction to your garden, or home.
Here are some strategies to consider:
Remove Food Sources: Ensure that baboons, or monkeys cannot access food in your garden.
Harvest ripe fruits promptly and securely store garbage and compost in baboon/monkey-proof containers. This reduces the incentive for baboons, or monkeys to visit your property.
NEVER feed baboons or monkeys. They will return to your property again and again.
Secure Bins and Containers: Baboons and monkeys are resourceful and can quickly learn how to open containers. Use sturdy bins with locking mechanisms to prevent them from accessing food waste or other enticing items.
Manage Water Sources: Baboons and monkeys require water for survival, so ensure that any outdoor water sources, such as taps or pools, are inaccessible to them. Repair leaking pipes or taps promptly to minimize water availability.
How to keep baboons, and monkeys away from your house?
Baboons and monkeys recognise acacia thorns as a deterrent, so to prevent them swinging on gutters or your DSTV dish, get some branches of acacia thorns and attach them to places you don't want baboons to go. It works really well and apart from a bit of time and effort no costs involved.
Latch Windows & Doors
Put additional locks onto sliding doors to stop baboons or monkeys forcing them off their runners.
Use round door handles wherever possible as baboons find these handles difficult to grasp.
Install burglar bars and ensure there is no more than an 8 cm gap in the bars.
Juvenile baboons and monkeys can even get through cat and dog flaps. There are devices that you can attach to the collar of your pet so that the flap only opens as they approach and won't remain open all the time.
Blinds and curtains prevent baboons from seeing into your home – if they can’t see any obvious food source they’ll be less likely to try to get into your house.
Go Electric
If you have the budget, electric fences are an effective way to protect your property from baboons and monkeys.
They are one of the best baboon and monkey deterrents, but be sure to use the correct current as per regulation, and have the fence constructed properly so that you’re protecting your property without compromising on safety.
Put deterrents such as additional electrification around your DSTV dish – it’s costly to replace these and they are a huge attraction for young baboons or monkeys to investigate.
An ingenious alternative is to strap the thorny branches of acacia trees around the DSTV dish – baboons and monkeys immediately recognise the long thorns and know to avoid that area.
Another way to protect your TV antennas is to install them in the ceiling of your roof.
Baboon/Monkey-Proof Your Dustbins
Baboons and monkeys are attracted to your organic garbage and may come onto your property in search of tasty treats. Remove the threat and protect your home from baboons by baboon/monkey-proofing your dustbins.
Separating your organic garbage into a separate container, not accessible to baboons, or monkeys is a great way to repel baboons and monkeys.
If possible, keep your garbage bin out of sight (e.g. in your garage) until collection day. Secure your bin upright by attaching it to a pole or wall – baboons and monkeys have learnt that if they knock baboon/monkey-proof bins over the locks may pop open.
Padlock Everything
Padlock everything including your bins. We know by baboon and monkey behaviour that they are smart, have nimble fingers, and can open unlocked cupboards and bins with ease. Make it difficult for them to access these items as this will deter them from coming onto your property in future.
What to do if a baboon enters your house?
If baboons or monkeys enter your house, make way so they exit unhindered.
Always treat baboons and monkeys with caution, do not corner them as they may become aggressive when they feel threatened.
Keep pets away in a locked room until all baboons and monkeys have left.
Never threaten baboons and monkeys, or take food items from them.
What should you do if confronted by a baboon, or monkey?
If confronted by a baboon, or monkey try and stand your ground, but don’t challenge it.
If you run away, you will most likely be chased
Staring directly at a baboon or monkey could be perceived as threatening behaviour.
Calmly walk away if the baboon, or monkey hasn’t done so already.
Men@WorX hopes that these suggestions are helpful in protecting your property from baboons, and monkeys including the damage caused to properties.
